宁波，简称“甬”，取“海定则波宁”之义。宁波地处中国东南沿海，是一座位于北纬30°线上的现代化滨海大都市。

Ningbo, "Yong" for short, takes its name from the saying "If the sea is calm, the waves are peaceful". Situated on the southeastern coast of China, Ningbo stands proudly as a modern coastal metropolis bustling on the 30th parallel of north latitude.

这里以水为魂，倚港衍生，既有江南水乡的诗情画意，也有海港城市的锐意进取，以“书藏古今，港通天下”的城市名片享誉全球。

With water as its soul and its port as its source, Ningbo exudes the enchanting ambiance typical of Jiangnan water regions, complemented by the enterprising spirit of a thriving seaport city. 宁波是计划单列市，是长江三角洲南翼经济中心，综合经济实力在中国各城市中位于第11名。

Ningbo, a city individually listed in the national economic plan, stands as the economic powerhouse in the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta. It holds the 11th position in China, evidencing its robust comprehensive economic strength.

背靠中国大陆，面向东海，宁波与生俱来的海纳百川、开放包容的胸襟魅力，也孕育了勇立潮头、开拓进取的宁波人。

自然地理 宁波的坐标为东经120°55′，至122°16′，北纬 28°51′，至30°33′，位于中国大陆海岸线中段、长江三角洲南翼，东有舟山群岛为天然屏障，北濒杭州湾，西接绍兴市，南邻台州市，与美国休斯敦、新奥尔良，埃及开罗，印度新德里等城市同处神秘的北纬30°。

Geographical Location Ningbo (120° 55′—122° 16′E and 28° 51′—30° 33′N) lies in the middle section of the Chinese mainland coast and on the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta. It is bordered by the Zhoushan Archipelago to the east, the Hangzhou Bay to the north, Shaoxing City to the west, and Taizhou City to the south. Additionally, Ningbo shares the mysterious latitude north of 30° with cities like Cairo, Delhi, Houston, and New Orleans.

宁波地势西南高、东北低，以平原丘陵为主，甬江水系穿城而过。全市陆域面积9816平方千米，略大于美国纽约、加拿大多伦多等城市。海域面积8355.8平方千米，拥有绵延的岸线、多样的海岛、优美的海湾。宁波属于典型的北亚热带季风气候，温和湿润、雨量充沛，四季较为分明。

The topography of Ningbo displays a dramatic variation, with higher elevations in the southwest gradually descending to lower areas in the northeast. The region is predominantly characterized by plains and hills, with the Yong River flowing through the city, enriching its water system. Ningbo is 9816 km² in land area, slightly larger than cities like New York in the United States and Toronto in Canada.With a maritime area of 8355.8 km², it boasts a picturesque coastline, diverse islands, and beautiful bays. There is a typical North Subtropical Monsoon climate, characterized by mild and humid conditions, ample rainfall, and clearly defined four seasons.

区划人口 宁波市下辖6个区、2个县和2个县级市，分别是海曙区、江北区、镇海区、北仑区、鄞州区、奉化区、宁海县、象山县、余姚市、慈溪市。截至2024年，宁波常住人口接近1000万人，与匈牙利人口相当。城镇化率为80.9%，城镇人口为790.5万人。

Districts and Population Ningbo is composed of six districts, two counties, and two county-level cities. The districts include Haishu, Jiangbei, Zhenhai, Beilun, Yinzhou, and Fenghua. The counties consist of Ninghai and Xiangshan, while the county-level cities include Yuyao and Cixi. By the end of 2024, the population of Ningbo ran close to 10 million, a figure comparable to the entire population of Hungary. Its urbanization rate stood at 80.9%, with an urban population of 7.905 million.

经济发展 2025年全市地区生产总值18716亿元，按不变价格计算，同比增长4.9%。分产业看，第一产业增加值472亿元，增长3.9%；第二产业增加值7866亿元，增长4.0%；第三产业增加值10378亿元，增长5.6%。三次产业之比为2.5∶42.0∶55.5。三次产业对GDP增长的贡献率分别为1.9%、36.2%和61.9%。2024年，宁波市人均GDP为186379元（按年平均汇率折合26171美元）。

Economic Development In 2025, Ningbo achieved a regional gross domestic product (GDP) of 1.8716 trillion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.9% at constant prices. By sector, the added value of the primary industry reached 47.2 billion yuan, up 3.9%; the secondary industry recorded 786.6 billion yuan, growing by 4.0%; and the tertiary industry reached 1,037.8 billion yuan, an increase of 5.6%. The ratio of these three sectors was 2.5: 42.0: 55.5. Their respective contributions to GDP growth were 1.9%, 36.2%, and 61.9%. In 2024, Ningbo's per capita GDP stood at 186,379 yuan (equivalent to 26,171 US dollars at the average annual exchange rate).

历史沿革 宁波历史悠久，8300多年前的井头山遗址见证了宁波地区先民迈出向海而生的第一步。7000多年前，宁波先民创立了河姆渡部落，向世人呈现出饭稻羹鱼、万物有灵的远古江南风情。

History With a history spanning over thousands of years, Ningbo's journey towards the sea began with the footsteps of our ancestors at the ancient Jingtoushan Ruins, dating back more than 8300 years. Over 7000 years ago, these ancestors established the Hemudu Tribe, revealing to the world the ancient charm of Jiangnan water towns with its cultivation of rice, fishing, and the belief in the spirits within all things.

宁波在夏商时代（约公元前2070年—公元前1046年）称“鄞”，春秋时（公元前770年—公元前476年）为越国境地。秦时（公元前221年—公元前206年）于今境内设鄞、鄮、句章、余姚四县，唐时（618年—907年）称“明州”。

In the Xia and Shang Dynasties (approximately 2070 BC-1046 BC), Ningbo was known as "Yin", and during the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC), it was part of the Yue State. During the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC), Ningbo was under the jurisdiction of four counties: Yin, Mao, Gouzhang, and Yuyao. In the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it was known as "Mingzhou".

唐长庆元年（821年），明州州治迁到三江口（甬江、姚江、奉化江交汇之地）并筑子城，标志着宁波建城之始。明洪武十四年（1381年），取“海定则波宁”之义改称“宁波”，一直沿用至今。

In 821, the capital of Mingzhou Prefecture was relocated to Sanjiangkou (the confluence of three rivers, i.e., the Yong, Fenghua, and Yuyao rivers), and the construction of fortress and city walls marked the beginning of Ningbo's city establishment. In 1381, the city was officially renamed Ningbo, a name that symbolizes the tranquility of the sea when the waves are calm. This name has endured to the present day.

1987年，宁波成为计划单列市，具有较大权限制定地方性法规，后被确定为中国15个副省级城市之一。

In 1987, Ningbo gained recognition as a separately listed city in the state's economic plan, granting it greater autonomy in implementing local regulations. Seven years later, it was designated as one of China's 15 sub-provincial cities.

文化底蕴 亚洲现存历史最悠久、最古老的私人藏书楼天一阁，享有“南国书城”的盛誉，见证着书香文化的延续和发展；明代哲学家王阳明开创“阳明学派”，以“知行合一”为核心的阳明文化在全世界影响深远；古代明州港（宁波港）江海通航水运航标天封塔，矗立千年，诉说着悠久灿烂的海丝文化。

Profound Culture Tianyige Library, the oldest surviving private library in Asia, holds the prestigious title of "Book City of South China", showcasing the deep-rooted literary culture and its continuous development. Wang Yangming, a renowned philosopher of the Ming Dynasty, established the influential Wang Yangming School, advocating the philosophy of the "unity of knowing and acting" that has resonated globally. Mingzhou Port, now known as Ningbo Port, has a rich maritime history, with the Tianfeng Pagoda serving as a symbol of navigation for centuries, reflecting the city's enduring and remarkable legacy in the maritime culture of the Silk Road.

近现代，宁波籍海内外人士叱咤商海，足迹遍布天下，以“无宁不成市”闻名遐迩，为上海的崛起和香港的繁荣作出了重大贡献。当代，宁波更是著名的“院士之乡”，宁波籍两院院士数量居全国第一位。

In modern times, the Ningbo natives at home and abroad exert significant influence in the business sphere, extending their reach globally. They have gained prominence for the statement, "A market cannot be formed and business cannot be conducted without people from Ningbo." Their substantial contributions were integral to the rise of Shanghai and the prosperity of Hong Kong. In contemporary times, Ningbo is reputed as the "City of Academicians", recognized for having the highest number of members from Ningbo of the two academies [Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE)] across the country.
